Grenada’s flag bearers Ishona Charles and Tyler Smith joined with the 4400 athletes representing their respective nations in the parade.
A spectacular ceremony took place outside of the stadium described by International Paralympics Committee President Andrew Parsons as a traditional ceremony in a non-traditional venue.
For the first time in the history of the Paralympics the opening ceremony took place outside of a stadium. The iconic Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysees served as the backdrop when athletes from around the world paraded.
The first of the two Grenadian athletes in competition in the Paris Paralympics is Ishona Charles, She will compete in the women’s shot put F46 on September 4th. Her second event is the javelin F46 on September 6.
Tyler Smith, the 2023 Junior Commonwealth Games bronze medalist goes into action on September 7 in the men’s shot put F63 category. The two athletes gearing up for the challenge of competing against the best para-athletes in the world.
According to team coach Bassanio Nicholas the two athletes are in great shape and had a first training session in Paris on Tuesday. He said they are in high spirit and are looking forward to recording their best performances in their respective events.
Head of delegation and chief of mission Alvin Clouden said the team was comfortable in the games village that they had completed all the necessary meetings and paperwork for the athlete’s participation.
The Grenadian athletes have already participated in the election of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) Athlete Commission by voting for the candidates contesting positions.
